Mary Francis Hayes

Mary Francis Hayes

Senior Pastor & Head of Staff

Hello everyone!  I am so grateful for FPC of Newhall. I began my call and position here on November 1, 2023. In the time that I have been here, I have been surrounded by God’s love, blessings, presence, and calls because of our church community. The family of faith here is the real deal. Thank you, Lord! I am growing deep roots, serving others, living life together, and learning together.
Fun Fact: I grew up in the PCUSA, as a cradle to grave believer. On my dad’s side I am fourth-generation PCUSA and on my mom’s side Catholic “fourth-generation”/PCUSA first generation 🙂😂🙏
I was born and raised in Cincinnati Ohio, lived in New Jersey during seminary, and am so excited and grateful to officially be a Californian. 🙂🩷🙏

Phil Aijian

Phil Aijian

Care Pastor

“If I have a hobby, it is caring for people,” is a statement Pastor Phil recently made, and one he has made numerous times. He is the heart of the church, caring for the sick and dying; leading the deacons in helping minister to the church body, and listening intently to members needing support and comfort. “You might not believe it, but I came kicking and screaming to being Pastoral Support at First Pres,” Phil stated. But as he has said many times, it turns out that it is his passion as well as his calling. His biggest passion is caring for church folk, the immediate community, the greater Santa Clarita Valley, and then beyond. “This includes the whole world,” Phil explained. The Presbytery commissioned him a Lay Pastor in 2010, and at First Pres, he functions as the Interim Pastor after Pastor Bill’s retirement.  To continue to serve you in this new capacity is an amazing privilege and an honor. You humble me. Let’s join hands and together follow the leading of the Spirit into our future that God holds securely in his all-mighty hand! Amen.

Bob Balkcom

Bob Balkcom

Office Manager

As Bob said himself, “I have enjoyed working at FPCN for 6 years and counting.”  For all this time, Bob has been the shortstop at Church; he has fielded many balls to all the other church players.  Prior to entering church service, Balkcom spent over 20 years in diversified IT and Business operations. If keeping up with his church duties was not demanding enough, Bob has two boys he has to keep up with too-Rawleigh and Gus.

Bryce Morrow

Bryce Morrow

Director of Youth Ministries

Bryce, an actor and comic by choice and youth director by calling, is leading the church’s youth ministry through “Ignite Youth”, a program of sharing, retreats, camps, mission trips, and weekly youth meetings where life problems and successes are shared. His goal is to guide the church’s youths towards a life of love, understanding, and giving- a Christian life. From his teenage years, Bryce has been called to the stage and sketch comedy, but after soulful prayer, he realized his second calling was to minister to youths at First Presbyterian Church, Newhall and help guide them to adulthood.

Sam Besse

Sam Besse

EverThirst Praise Band Leader and church Bookkeeper

Samuel Besse leads the versatile eclectic band EverThirst. He feels musically alive when he is singing and strumming his guitar, even if it is only an audience of one-himself.  From the age of five, he was drawn to music and performing; out of this love has grown the band and they perform at First Presbyterian Church. Sam is the vocalist and guitarist for EverThirst, and his band includes Kris Feldman, vocalist, flutist and pianist; Louis Turman, bass guitar; and Theo Mordey, percussionist.

Little Shepherd’s Nursery School

Sharie Dunn Telles

Sharie Dunn Telles

Director, Little Shepherd's Nursery School

Some people have a calling to sing or to become a doctor or to be a lawyer, but Sharie Dunn Telles knew at an early age her calling was to be an Early Childhood teacher. And now she directs First Presbyterian Church’s Little Shepherd’s Nursery School in its mission to nurture, teach and care for the children enrolled in the preschool. She has had a lifetime of care giving to young children in mostly private school settings, and currently has six years of teaching at Little Shepherds. Now she holds the leadership role in the school, which is located on the church’s campus and is a ministry of the church.

She began her Early Childhood career with the Burbank Children’s Centers after which she ran a successful home day care business when her 2 boys were young and has since worked for private church related preschools both in Burbank and in Santa Clarita. She directed a preschool in Burbank prior to moving to SCV and then taught at a local preschool for 25 years during which she served as a mentor teacher for many years through College of the Canyons Early Childhood program which allowed her to share her passion for teaching in her classroom with practicum college students. She was also part of a transition team for the preschool and served as director assistant until she retired. Shortly after her retirement she was called to serve at Little Shepherd’s Nursery School and has been serving this wonderful preschool ever since that calling. In addition to a college degree she holds an Early Childhood Site Supervisor Permit with the State of California. She has also helped with preschool startups in navigating the licensing requirements. She now has competition in her passion for Early Childhood as she is blessed with grandchildren.

Chris Ward

Chris Ward

Co-Director, Little Shepherd's Nursery School

Chris Ward is a firm believer that, as she says, “play is a lifetime pursuit,” which she intends to always pursue in her life. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University and Master’s in Social Work from Tulane University, she spent many years in child/adolescent and family counseling and play therapy with children. She also taught elementary school for 6 years and preschool for 5. When she needed a preschool for her 6 children, Chris discovered Little Shepherd’s, and she sent all 6 to the preschool, describing Little Shepherd’s as “the perfect first school experience.” Now she is co-director at Little Shepherd’s Nursery School, and she says the experience reminds her why she went into preschool teaching in the fist place, which is to give every child the best educational start in life.
