Whether amateur or professional, we look for means of
expression that reward us with the greatest
satisfaction. That alone can be the driving force to
perfection, or at least to the highest possible level of
attainment, depending on the level of skills learned and/or
employed. In a church family we are exposed to the
entire gamut of professional (qualified, competent) and
amateur (enthusiastic volunteer - from the Latin "Amat,"
to love) efforts as we try to live and proclaim our Christian
beliefs in a most complete manner, seeking guidance and
leadership while providing for individual involvement. In
directing the chancel choir, I certainly get to work with a
group of volunteers who, because of their love for music and
its role in church life, give much of their time and effort in
trying to attain the aforementioned highest level. It
seems fitting to do so as we become one of the channels for
the love of Christ. We return talent to God in hopes of
opening His door to others. I know that most of you are
familiar with the time involved; Thursday evenings for two
hours plus a half hour before Sunday Service. But what
of the effort, because it certainly is not a sing-along.
